Overview

Nortal is a strategic digital transformation partner for leading companies and governments worldwide. We take on the problems that matter and work only on engagements we believe in — from digitising governments and transforming healthcare systems to helping Fortune 500 companies build competitive advantage through technology.

We are looking for a Mid-level Software Engineer who is ready to own feature delivery and start shaping how things get built, not just execute what others define. You will work in Java across complex, distributed systems, within a cross-functional team, contribute to architectural decisions, and be the person junior engineers turn to when they are stuck. The work is complex, the clients are demanding, and the standards are high. That is what makes it interesting.

What you'll do

  • Lead effort on multiple feature implementations, including code reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and coordinating bug fixes and deployment
  • Implement CD and DevSecOps practices and manage test data for integration and UI tests
  • Create and maintain documentation of APIs and technical user stories, and share knowledge through brown bag or lunch-and-learn sessions
  • Recognise new potential expansion of scope or business opportunities and bring them to the right people
  • Integrate AI tools effectively into your daily workflow, evaluate output quality, and keep data handling compliant — no PII, secrets, or production data into AI tools unless explicitly permitted

What you bring

  • At least 6 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on experience with Java backend development
  • Solid experience and proficiency in Java, including major frameworks and libraries
  • Experience with government e-services is an advantage; experience with ERP, banking, or financial systems is also relevant
  • Understanding of core design patterns, caching, search patterns, and relational data
  • Experience working with relational databases, including SQL schema design and optimisation; experience with Oracle databases is an advantage
  • Understanding of different programming methodologies (functional vs. object-oriented, imperative vs. declarative) and when to apply each
  • Comfortable with CD and DevSecOps practices, integration and UI test management, and version control, preferably Git
  • Good communication skills in English (spoken and written)

We believe complexity doesn't have to mean complicated, and that the best solutions are those that work in the real world, not just on paper. That's why our clients trust us with their most ambitious, business-critical initiatives.

Our recruitment process typically includes an initial intro call, followed by technical and capability interviews. We will walk you through the steps when we connect.
